CONTRACT CONDITIONS

The SmartBank storage contract includes:

  1. Shipping of the SmartKit;
  2. Pre-birth information assistance;
  3. Shipping of sample to the UK, in temperature-controlled packaging, by international express courier authorised for the transportation of diagnostic samples;
  4. Handling of blood and laboratory tests required for cryogenic storage;
  5. Collection and maintenance of data in a database for 55 years;
  6. Certificate of cryogenic storage with laboratory test results;
  7. Storage of stem cells for the first 25 years (renewable)
  8. Immediate availability of sample anywhere in the world, in the event of reuse.

The cost of the SmartKit and administrative registration amounts to € 250.00 VAT inclusive. This cost cannot be reimbursed and must be paid within 10 days of receiving the kit, by bank credit transfer.
The cost of cryogenic storage for the first 25 years is € 2,000.00 VAT inclusive. This cost will be reimbursed, or need not be paid, in the following circumstances:

  • Impossibility of collecting or shipping the sample;
  • Impossibility of handling cord blood due to insufficient volume;
  • Impossibility of preserving a suitable amount of stem cells.

In the event of a multiple birth, the same amount of SmartKits must be ordered as the number of infants that will be born. Please contact SmartBank for information on prices and payment terms that vary depending on the number of infants.

Parents may withdraw from the storage contract if a sample is insufficient for some medical uses due to the quantity (less than 500,000 CD34+ cells) and/or quality (less than 50% of cells metabolically active). In the event of withdrawal, in addition to the cost of the kit, a further charge of 350.00 VAT inclusive will be made for processing costs partial recovery.

The cost does not include the following blood tests that the mother must undergo in the last month of pregnancy and repeat six months after giving birth, as required by EU laws, for the purpose of cord blood storage and its free movement within the European Union:

Hepatitis B: HBsAb, HBeAg, HBeAb, HBcAb (IgG – IgM), HBcAb IgM, HBSAg
Hepatitis C antibodies, HIV 1 and 2 antibodies
Syphilis (‘VDRL’ or ‘RPR’ or ‘TPR’ or ‘LUE’, or ‘TPHA’)
HTLV1/2 antibodies
Cytomegalovirus (CMV)


There are three different alternative types of tests that are all equally valid.
These are RNA lymphotropic virus; it is a virus similar to HIV but different, linked to some types of leukaemia. It is compulsory in the European Union as foreseen by the Directive 2006/17/CE dated 8.2.2006.
