“The transplantation of human tissues and cells is a strongly expanding field of medicine offering great opportunities for the treatment of as yet incurable diseases. The quality and safety of these substances should be ensured, particularly in order to prevent the transmission of diseases”.
(The Recital no. 1 of the Directive 2004 23 of the European Union, that sets out the quality and safety rules for human tissue and cells destined for application in humans, in order to guarantee a high level of protection for human health).
In Italy, the law does not permit the setting up of private laboratories to preserve cord stem cells for personal use until at least February 2009. However, the right to export and preserve cord stem cells in a private lab overseas, such as the one used by SmartBank has been possible for some years.
The SmartBank team is available to provide information on the regulations and legislation regulating stem cell storage in other countries. Please contact SmartBank (info@smartbank.it) for assistance. |
